Rosemary and I went to a Nick Cave exhibition at the Guggenheim. It was powerful work, with one floor dedicated to his earlier work and influences, another to present sculptural assemblages, and a room of his Sound Suits which we really love. When you see the earlier stuff, his engagement with the politics of black and queer representation are more overt. The sound suits began as a work of assembly that functioned as armor against racist violence. I'm sure he has a studio of assistants and "fabricators" that help him with the very labor intensive assembly of plastic and metal flowers, bird statuettes, buttons and beads, the detritus of thrift stores, fabrics and toys.
Up next: Brooklyn Art Museum's Thierry Mugler show "Couturissime" which Rosemary says is really excellent.
The Poster House has two shows up that are worth a visit: Made in Japan and Black Power to Black People. I always appreciate the way the Poster House makes the most of its space to mount exciting shows.
There's a Georgia O'Keeffe show at the MOMA.
