Easy Living (1937) was written by Preston Sturges and directed by Mitchell Leisen. Jean Arthur stars as a young woman whose fortunes change when a sable coat lands on her head while she's riding a double-decker bus. I'd seen it years ago and remembered it as funny and entertaining. It's full of pratfalls, mistaken identity, and a great sequence in an automat.
There are several clips of scenes filmed at an Automat on YouTube. At the height of their success, there were 46 in New York City. The last one closed in 1991. There are still automats in Japan and Amsterdam.Tuesday, July 20, 2021
