Misterios de Lisboa

 I had never seen anything by prolific Chilean director Raúl Ruiz so I watched Misterios de Lisboa, a four and a half hour film based on a nineteenth-century Portuguese novel. It is set during the time of Napoleon and is a chain of stories about paternity, love and betrayal among the nobility. A good chunk of the dialogue was in French, which felt transparent compared to my very limited understanding of the Portuguese. Each segment was connected to the next by a character whose story was told as a flashback; indeed, the entire film is a series of acts of storytelling. Since I have been binge-watching series, it didn't feel like a long movie but like a short series. All of the men were very beautiful. Léa Seydoux has an appearance as a minor character. I should try to hunt down his film based on Proust's Le temps retrouvé.
