Caught up with Johnny To's 1999 film The Mission (the title in Chinese is Gunfire). I had already seen this but I can't remember whether it was part of a Maggie Cheung marathon (she has a bit part) or what. It's another Hong Kong action film for our Thursday night cinema club, but more cool and stylish than City on Fire. Five bodyguards are hired to protect a Triad boss. Much of the film has no dialogue but relationships are communicated efficiently. The shoot-out in the shopping mall is excellently choreographed.
The twist at the end is a surprise. The score is a total synthy earworm (BA buh buh BA buh buh NA na na Na!). Triad professionalism, honor among gunmen, blam blam blam blam blam!
